Five minutes with…Katrina Campbell, senior underwriter at IUA

12 May, 2022

Q. When did you join IUA and have you always worked in insurance?

A. I started at IUA in 2000 and worked there until 2002 as an administration assistant. At the time my brother was working at IUA, which is how I found out about the job. I then travelled to London and Ireland and worked in various office and admin roles, but not in the insurance industry. When I returned to Australia in 2009 I needed a local reference for a job I was applying for, so I contacted the team at IUA, who told me that they might have a role for me. It turned out they did, and I rejoined IUA in 2009 as an underwriter.

Q. What does your role entail, day-to day?

A. I mainly handle new business enquiries, looking over financials to help establish how to set up sums insured and analysing risks. I also keep an eye on our claims to make sure that we appoint loss adjusters in a timely manner, and I’m the contact point if anything to do wth claims needs following up. While we don't have claims authority, we like to know what's happening with our claims because it’s all relevant to the risk itself. I also head up our process improvement initiatives and conduct presentations for brokers who want to learn more about business interruption insurance.

Q. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

A. I’ve got two kids, aged 9 and 11, so I spend a lot of time with them when I’m not working, hanging out, playing board games, taking them to the beach, and chauffeuring them around to their activities. Whenever I can fit in some time for myself, I like to do classes at the gym. And last year, I started playing OzTag, I didn’t know the rules but just thought I’d give it a go and that was a lot of fun. Also, my husband and I are both from Ireland so we also like traveling back there to visit family.

Q. What’s something most people probably don’t know about you?

A. I emigrated to Australia from Ireland in 1990 with my parents. When I was younger, I did Irish dancing, and I actually competed at the world championships.
